Petition on Change.org asks Walmart to accept bitcoin payments

A new petition has surfaced on Change.org that asks Walmart Inc. to accept bitcoin payments. It has seen 54 supporters so far and will be delivered to Walmart.

A person from Canada named William Bugden has started this petition on Change.org. The petition talks about bitcoin replacing VISA. It comes as a result of Walmart dropping VISA payment methods due to the high fees associated with it. In addition, unlike VISA, bitcoin has little traction.

“Walmart is dropping VISA as a method of payment because of high fees, Bitcoin provides an easy method for paying just as VISA but with lower fees,” the petition stated. “Losing VISA as a payment option could affect many people that rely on VISA to pay for items at Walmart.  Bitcoin is a great alternative to VISA because of the adoption rate.”

The primary objective of this petition is to make Walmart accept bitcoin payments directly. According to themerkle.com, although there is an argument on how bitcoin is cheaper and accepting the cryptocurrency is convenient, it is doubtful Walmart would accept digital currency payments.

In recent times, bitcoin market cap has been increasing and is larger than the total valuation of the Western Union or Twitter. This has made many stores to accept bitcoins as a payment method. Companies like Tesla, Amazon, an American retail company Target are among others that accept bitcoin payments.

“Currently, the Bitcoin market is worth nearly 12 billion dollars U.S. but it's difficult to spend. There are many online stores that accept Bitcoin but few stores that take it over the counter, making Bitcoin an untapped market for many retailers,” said the petition.

The petition will be passed to the superstore once the supporters count becomes 100. If chain of superstores like Walmart starts accepting bitcoins, it would enhance the adoption rate of the cryptocurrency in the U.S. and Canada.

Change.org is a platform where people everywhere can start campaigns, mobilize supporters and work with decision makers to drive solutions.
